Brushing your teeth is essential, but it only cleans about 60% of the tooth surfaces. The remaining areas—between your teeth and below the gumline—are where plaque and food debris accumulate, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. This is why interdental cleaning is just as important as brushing.

Flossing is the traditional way to clean between teeth, but let’s be honest—do you have the time, dexterity, and skill to do it properly every day without hurting your gums?

Many people struggle with regular floss, either snapping it too hard, missing certain areas, or skipping it altogether. This is where water flossers come in. What Is a Water Flosser?

A water flosser is a handheld device that uses a steady stream of water to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and along the gumline. It is designed to reach areas that brushing alone cannot clean effectively.

Why Should You Use One?

More Effective Than Brushing Alone – Toothbrushes can’t reach between teeth, leaving plaque and bacteria behind.

Gentle on Gums – Unlike string floss, which can cause irritation or bleeding if used incorrectly, a water flosser is gentle yet effective.

Great for Aligners, Braces, Implants, and Crowns – It easily cleans around orthodontic wires, bridges, and other dental work.

Easy to Use – No more struggling with floss. A water flosser does the job with minimal effort.

Should You Replace Traditional Floss?

While regular floss is effective, using it properly requires time, patience, and the right technique. If flossing daily feels like a hassle or if you find it uncomfortable, a water flosser can be a practical alternative.

Adding a water flosser to your routine can make a significant difference in your oral health. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, visit our clinic, and we’ll help you find the best approach to keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Undergoing a routine tooth extraction can be a mentally stressful experience, but proper post-operative care is essential for a smooth and speedy recovery

That’s why we’re here to help!!! 😊
That’s why we’re here to help!!! 😊

In this article, we will answer all possible questions you may have on how to go about after your dental surgery.

What to expect after a tooth removal?

  • After undergoing a tooth extraction, it is normal to experience minor bleeding and discomfort for the first 1-2 days.

  • The numbness (anaesthesia given) will usually wear off in 2-3 hours post-surgery.

  • You may notice some tightness and stiffness in the jaw and joint areas, which should gradually improve over time.

How do I avoid possible complications?

  • Continue normal brushing but avoid brushing on the extraction site for a day to prevent irritation.

  • If provided, gently bite on gauze/cotton for 30 minutes after the appointment to control bleeding.

  • Avoid smoking, spitting, drinking through a straw, or consuming carbonated beverages for 3 days.

  • Refrain from rinsing for the first 24 hours to allow the blood clot to form and the site to heal properly.

  • If upper teeth were extracted, avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully to prevent sinus damage.

What can I eat and not eat after a tooth extraction?

First of all, go ahead and enjoy an ice cream in a cup (without nuts) right after your extraction!

During the first day after surgery:

  • DO have soft, cool foods such as curd, dal rice, cottage cheese (paneer), room temperature soup, etc

  • AVOID hot, hard and spicy foods.

  • Gradually resume your normal diet after 24 hours.

I just got my tooth removed, what about the pain?

  • Listen to your doctor’s instructions carefully.

  • To manage pain and swelling, you may be advised to take over-the-counter pain medication as directed.

  • Additionally, applying an ice pack to the affected area for 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • If the pain is not resolved with the above solutions, worry not - contact the team at The Happy Tooth Dental Clinic so we can provide you with the best of assistance.

How to make the best use

  • CONSISTENCY IS KEY:

Follow your doctor's instructions and strictly wear your aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day to achieve the best results.

  • HANDLE WITH CARE:

Wash your hands thoroughly before touching aligners, and handle only one aligner at a time.

  • PROPER USE:

Insert your aligners by wetting them and gently pushing them over your front teeth and applying equal pressure to your molars (back teeth) until they snap into place.

When removing them, use your fingertips to slowly ‘peel them away’ from your teeth, starting from the inner (tongue) side of your back molars.

  • USE CHEWIES:

These can help seat your aligners properly for a uniform fit.

Simply place the chewie between your teeth and the aligner, squeeze down for about 30 seconds, and repeat.

This method should be done each time you get a new aligner for the first 3 days, at least 2-3 times per day.

  • DAILY MAINTENANCE:

Clean your aligners daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush and water, and avoid using denture cleaners or soaking them in mouthwash. Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than cool water, and remember to brush and floss your teeth before reinserting them.

  • STORAGE:

Always use the aligner case provided in your starter kit to store your aligners when they are not in your mouth, and keep older aligners in a clean plastic bag as instructed by your doctor.

ree

Avoid leaving them on surfaces where they could be easily lost or damaged, and be cautious of pets who may be tempted to chew on them.

  • GETTING USED TO IT:

Initially, you may find it difficult to speak or experience extra saliva, but these issues typically resolve within a few days.

Things to note, just in case:

  • YOU LOST AN ALIGNER:

If you have worn the lost set for 6 days or more, simply start the next set.

If worn for less than 6 days, go back to the previous set and call us for a replacement.

  • YOU NOTICE A CRACK:

Handle them the same as lost aligners. There is a charge to replace lost or damaged aligners.

  • AN ATTACHMENT FALLS OFF:

Please call us to schedule a repair visit.

Oral Hygiene with Aligners

Maintaining good oral hygiene is extremely essential for the success of your Invisalign treatment. Don’t forget to:

  • REMOVE Aligners BEFORE Eating and Drinking:

Take out your aligners before meals and snacks, and brush and floss your teeth before reinserting them.

  • REGULAR Dental Checkups:

Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings to ensure good health of your teeth and gums.

By following these guidelines and practising proper oral hygiene, you can maximize the effectiveness of your Invisalign treatment and achieve the smile you've always wanted.

If you have any questions or concerns along the way, don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

We're here to support you on your smile journey! 🌟
