All You Need To Know After A Routine Tooth Removal

Undergoing a routine tooth extraction can be a mentally stressful experience, but proper post-operative care is essential for

a smooth and speedy recovery

That’s why we’re here to help! 😊

In this article, we will answer all possible questions you may have on how to go about after your dental surgery.

What to expect after a tooth removal?

  • After undergoing a tooth extraction, it is normal to experience minor bleeding and discomfort for the first 1-2 days.

  • The numbness (anaesthesia given) will usually wear off in 2-3 hours post-surgery.

  • You may notice some tightness and stiffness in the jaw and joint areas, which should gradually improve over time.

How do I avoid possible complications?

  • Continue normal brushing but avoid brushing on the extraction site for a days to prevent irritation.

  • If provided, gently bite on gauze/cotton for 30 minutes after the appointment to control bleeding.

  • Avoid smoking, spitting, drinking through a straw, or consuming carbonated beverages for 3 days.

  • Refrain from rinsing for the first 24 hours to allow the blood clot to form and the site to heal properly.

  • If upper teeth were extracted, avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully to prevent sinus damage.

What can I eat and not eat after a tooth extraction?

First of all, go ahead and enjoy an ice cream in a cup (without nuts) right after your extraction!

It’s your birthright!

During the first day after surgery:

  • DO have soft, cool foods such as curd, dal rice, cottage cheese (paneer), room temperature soup, etc

  • AVOID hot, hard and spicy foods.

  • Gradually resume your normal diet after 24 hours.

I just got my tooth removed, what about the pain?

  • Listen to your doctor’s instructions carefully.

  • To manage pain and swelling, you may be advised to take over-the-counter pain medication as directed.

  • Additionally, applying an ice pack to the affected area for 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
